THE WORKS OF PUBLIUS VIRGILIUS MARO, TRANSLATED, ADORNED WITH SCULPTURE, AND ILLUSTRATED WITH ANNOTATIONS |
| a very good copy - 1668, in elephant folio (17 by 10.5 inches), (6) 528 pp. contemporary covers with spine recently rebacked and new end papers, with 100 original plates of well kown artists: quite unusual, the book starts with a double plate (before title page) with the engraved portrait of Ogilby by William Faithorne after Peter Lely and an engraving by Pierre Lombart after Francis Cleyn. The title page is printed in red and black lettering. This volume is illustrated with 100 full-page engravings, including the portrait and title page, and engraved initials and head-and-tail pieces. Featured is a two-page map and one engraving with hand-colored tinting. the following are the srtist whose engravings comprise this book: 29 plate signed by Lombart, 42 plate signed by Hollar, 3 plate signed by Ludwig Richer, one Faithorne and one William Carter. 19 plates have no text of the back page. One leaf (pages 233/234) has been replaced with a facsimilia from the original book currenlty at Huntington Library on ancient paper and one etching folowing page 28 has been profesionally restored (about 3 by 3 inches from the engraving was missing). Complete set. Neat signature on the title page dated 1679 and below "WORKS" another siganature which was crossed out. Overall, an extremelly attractive book in VG conditions with some tears but most have been profesionally repaired. NOTE: the facsimilia page has been restored such as for a non-connoisseur of books, it would be difficult to see the difference. |

THE DANCES OF DEATH Through the Various Stages of Human Life; Wherein the Capriciousness of That Tyrant is Exhibited in Farty six Copper Plates; Done from the Original Designs Which Were Cut in Wood and Afterwards Painted By John Holbein |
| The Dances of Death, Through the Various Stages of Human Life. Wherein the Capriciousness of That Tyrant is Exhibited in Forty-six Copperplates, done from the Original Designs which Were Cut in Wood, and Afterwards Painted By John Holbein..... Edinburgh. Printed By W. Darling, Advocates Close, 1788. First Deuchars Edition. 8vo. [4], 46pp. With frontispiece portrait of Deuchars, portrait of Holbein, extra-engraved French title, and 48 etchings FOR A TOTAL OF 51 ETCHING. NOT EVEN ANOTHER ONE AVAIALBLE. Contemporary tree calf, rebacked with original spine and a new morocco lettering-piece laid down. Rubbed, with loss to corners. Hinges reinforced with buckram. Bookplate of Lieutenant General William Thornton M.P. to FEP. Sporadic marking and heavy foxing to text, with some offsetting to plates. Marginal paper repair to leaf D1. The first Deuchars edition of this classic of European medieval macabre, which rather disingenuously references the original illustrations of Hans Holbein as inspiration and source. David Deuchars (1743-1808), Goldsmith, seal engraved and amateur etcher produced this suite of 48 etchings without reference to the originals; 30 are copied from Wenceslaus Hollar's small suite of 1651, and 17 of the remainder from Hollar's own inspiration, Arnold Birckmann's woodcuts featuring in the 1551 edition. The French extra-engraved title is a copy of that present in the 1780 Mechel edition, altered to read 'D. Deuchar], is mistakenly dated 1786. The work would be entirely devoid of originality were it not for the frontispiece self-portrait and a likeness of Holbein that follows it. Known in two variants, with and without a nambed publisher to the imprint; this signed W. Darling is much rarer (meaning the name of the publisher on the title page) , with ESTC locating only two copies (BL and NLS). |
